The Wexford Name |
| |
In the
early 1990s, Sheila Cassidy, Wexford's Executive Director, visited
the Virginia country estate that had belonged to President and
Mrs. Kennedy. The estate was named Wexford after the county in
Ireland from which the President's ancestors emigrated. The Kennedys
had only lived in the estate for a few months before the President's
death. But, even 30 years later there was still very much a sense
of when President Kennedy and his family were there, including
a presidential seal hanging by President Kennedy's favorite rocking
chair next to the fireplace. Sheila was struck by the peacefulness
and beauty of the well-preserved estate and was inspired, at some
time, to develop creative and collaborative programs for peace
utilizing a wide range of technologies. When Wexford was founded,
it seemed appropriate to name it after this estate outside of Washington,
D.C. and the County Wexford in Ireland. |
